CHIROPRACTIC<\/h3>\n

Origin and bases: <\/strong> U.S. Alternative medicine practiced by university graduates with the title of DC (Doctor of Chiropractic). Studies take between 7-8 years in the U.S. and 5 years in Europe.
\nIn Spain there are two colleges, Both offer the chiropractic degree in five years. Daily frequency is mandatory, same as in medical and \/ or dental schools.
\nThe title DC is recognized in 44 countries and cannot be obtained by taking postgraduate or weekend courses.<\/p>\n

Primary Focus: Spine and Nervous System.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Type of manipulation: The specific vertebral “Adjustment”. <\/strong>
\nThere are over 150 manual techniques. Some use a small instrument called activator and special treatment tables.<\/p>\n

Based on their strong academic background, and the high number of class hours dedicated to spinal manipulation techniques, chiropractors are considered more experts in the specific manual treatment of the spine than any other health professional.<\/p>\n

Diseases or conditions in which is especially recommended:<\/strong>
\nChiropractors do not treat diseases. They primary goal is to restore the ideal alignment and movement between the vertebrae allowing maximum space for the spinal nerve roots. This ensures an optimum nervous irrigation, increase natural defenses and prevents all diseases.<\/p>\n

“Subluxations” (misalignment and lack of vertebral movement) may remain silent, with no apparent discomfort, for many years. It could be compared to tooth decay; it doesn\u2019t hurt until it “touches the nerve.”<\/p>\n

In fact, disc hernias occur between chronically locked or subluxated vertebrae.
\nThe sooner you unblock and realign the vertebrae, the less vertebrae and discs wear (less osteoarthritis) and better functions nervous system and immune (best natural defenses).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s advisable to begin chiropractic care from the first days of life, without waiting for pain or other symptoms. Many times, during the birth process, the 1st cervical vertebra (atlas) can become misaligned or “subluxated”. This may generate frequent disorders in infants and children such as low immunity, otitis, tonsillitis, asthma, intestinal colic, enuresis (bed wetting), dyslexia etc.<\/p>\n

Due to lack of information, most people go to the chiropractor only upon accusing symptoms associated with herniated discs, sciatica, back and leg or foot pain, knees, hips or neck pain, headaches, migraines, dizziness, tiredness etc.<\/p>\n

After a thorough physical examination, including x-rays, and other tests, the chiropractor studies every clinical case. If there are no contraindications he\/she elaborates a treatment plan to relieve symptoms and eliminate their causes.<\/p>\n

Often multidisciplinary treatment is necessary. The chiropractor may recommend physical therapy, acupuncture, podiatry, osteopathic and \/ or medical treatment, as needed. Every patient is informed from the beginning and can choose to get only relief or continue maintenance care. This means getting periodic spinal adjustments in order to prevent or detain osteoarthritis. It also ensures an optimum nervous flow and a correct communication of the brain with all body organs.<\/p>\n

OSTEOPATHY<\/h3>\n

Origin and bases:<\/strong> U.S., Alternative Medicine practiced by university graduates with the title of DO (Doctor of Osteopathy). In the U.S. studies last 7-8 years. In Europe there are colleges that offer the osteopathic degree and title DO in 4-5 years. Daily frequency is mandatory same as in medical, dental and chiropractic schools.<\/p>\n

Primary Focus: Craneo-sacral system, muscles and viscera.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Type of Manipulation: mobilization of muscular fascias techniques “muscle power”, manipulations of the cranial sutures, joints and viscera.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diseases or conditions in which is especially recommended:<\/strong>Similar to chiropractic, osteopathy tries to restore the overall balance of the person to increase their defenses against all kinds of diseases. It can also relieve ailments of the musculoskeletal system: lumbago, sciatica, herniated disc, neck pain headaches, migraines, dizziness, tiredness etc.<\/p>\n

In conclusion chiropractic and osteopathy are two complementary medicines. In Spain both are in the process of recognition.<\/p>\n

In the U.S., England, Switzerland and France, many chiropractors and osteopaths work together with other health professionals in multidisciplinary teams.<\/p>\n

Pay Attention:<\/h3>\n

  • In Spain there is no official regulation of these two professions. There are few professionals with university degrees in chiropractic and\/or osteopathy.<\/li>\n
  • Most ‘osteopaths’ of this country are graduates in physiotherapy, with notions of osteopathy after taking a post graduated course in osteopathy.<\/li>\n
  • There are also ‘osteopaths’ that are not even physiotherapists and ‘chiropractors’ without a university degree. There are weekend\u2019s courses, including courses on line, for those who can afford the fees, despite lacking the suitable scientific basis to access this type of degrees.<\/li>\n
  • In Spain there are many more “osteopaths” that chiropractic graduates. One reason is the duration and cost of the studies. In order to obtain the chiropractic degree one must study five years, daily frequency is mandatory and the fees are about 50,000 \u20ac. Osteopathic postgraduate courses are taught one weekend a month for 4 years and the fee approximately 5,000\u20ac.<\/li>\n
  • Spine and Skull protect the central nervous system. Before allowing anyone to manipulate you or your children, get informed with respect to the type of training the chiropractor and \/ or osteopath have. Independent of advertising and fame of the therapist ask him\/her where and how many years they have studied. It is obvious that the more years they studied the more knowledge they\u2019ve acquired.<\/li>\n
  • In every profession there are people with more knowledge, experience and commitment. Choose the best for your health and the health of your children.<\/li>\n
  • Think long-term and consider the future consequences of your choice.<\/li>\n
